FDPH201 - Client Brief - PCA

The first project brief of the second year of my photography course at Plymouth College of Art.

For this assignment, we had to work around a client to produce images for their requirements; this client was Plymouth College of Art. They wanted to develop their visual identity by promoting the social atmosphere of the college to show the diverse city future students will be studying in. This will be achieved by having a wide range of images that they will be able to use for the website and printed publications such as future prospectus, leaflets and other advertising publications.

For this project I decided to choose two disciple areas within the college to photograph, these were Film Arts and Fashion. The idea was to photograph the students working within their chosen subject areas not only promoting the wide range of equipment and facilities available to future students but to portray the atmosphere and interaction between student and their work, while showing how diverse opportunities the college has to offer for these two subjects.

Firstly I got in contact with the programme leader of Film Arts, to arrange a shoot with the students, in the film studio. This was really interesting to go along to and shoot as the third years were collaborating with the second years – it was a great atmosphere to be in, viewing the students interacting well with one another to produce a short film as a team. I did however find shooting this quite challenging as the students were using their own lighting set up, I decided against using any lighting equipment as this would of disrupted the set up of their shoot and so many images seemed overexposed which made the editing process more difficult. The second shoot I did with the film art students, was with the third years, before I started shooting them I sat for their lecture which was really interesting to listen to it was based on movement and form in composition created in film video frames, we looked at two videos on Lena Riefenstahl Olympia (1938) – (diving sequences and athletics) evaluating angles of the camera, and composition. Then I photographed the students on a team building exercise; working together using a projector and props projecting them on to a screen and filming the shape and forms created by these objects inspired by the videos from the lecture. It was again a great atmosphere to see the interaction between the students and lecturer working as a team.

Next I got in contact with the programme leader of Fashion, to arrange two shoots with the students. These shoots involved photographing the students in the fashion studio base room. The first shoot I found more difficult because I went along on one of there non timetabled days which meant there wasn’t guaranteed students working, so I wasn’t able to get many strong images of them engaging in their work. However the programme leader allowed me to come and shoot the students again on a busier day which became quite an successful shoot, I produced some really interesting images of the students working with the equipment, and the relationships between students and lecturers showing the support and individual time given to students at the colleges.

In conclusion I first found this project quite difficult to get into at first, I lacked motivation and inspiration, however once I finally concentrated on the project and found confidence in my images it all finally came together. I found some aspects of the project hard, due to working with pre set up lighting and getting the correct exposure to avoid blocked in shadows in my photographs which did make the editing process a lot more challenging. Overall I think I produced some really strong images that have reflected my project idea and I believe I have reached the client’s requirements.
