Update: Website

Today I updated my website  added new imagery to the section: The Body Project and imagery to the the section: People. I also changed the font typography to helvetica on the homepage; the heading and the links to each project pages I felt this gave the website a more professional feel and blended well with the logo, easier to read and is also the same typeface I use for my blog posts.

If you would like to see more of my work here is a link to my website:

WBL: Stewarding our Exhibition - 23rd

Saturday 23rd March:
Stewarding our exhibition from 11am - 4pm
at Trerise Gallery and Studios - Open from 18th to 28th March

Today i stewarded the exhibition again, with my fellow course peer, Roisin. The weather today was an improvement on yestoday but it was still very windy and cold and the location of the gallery in this weather means the visitor count is going to be small and the day slow. We did get few visitors every hour slowly throughout the day, but it eventually got slower in the late afternoon till quiet so we decided to lock up early, usually the gallery would stay open till 5-5.30pm. Although the day was slow and quiet at times we got some positive feedback from guests who visited and I've really enjoyed being part of this experience and gaining insight in what to expect in the future when I hope to exhibit my own work.

WBL: Stewarding our Exhibition - 22nd

Stewarding our Exhibition: 'The best so far'
Located at Trerise Gallery and studios from 18th - 28th March (If in the plymouth area don't hesitate to visit us - we would appreciate the support)
The exhibition is showcasing a selection of work from students, upcoming photographers at Plymouth College of Art - Fd Photography Yr 2

Today I stewarded our exhibition along with Brett and Rose my fellow course peers from 11am - 4pm. Unfortunately because the weather was very wet, cold and windy and also due to the location of the gallery we didn't really expect there to be a busy turnout. However we did get a visit from a course group that study at Plymouth College of Art in the morning which were kind enough to trek down in the rain to view our exhibition and we received positive feedback. Throughout the afternoon the wet weather continued and we had a slow and quiet visitor count, however this didn't put a downer on the day and we appreciated the support of those who came and admired our work - some visitors taking the time to leave feedback in our comments book situated in the gallery.

Experimentation shoot: Fragments with flash sync

Experimentation shoot:
Fragments of the body using artificial light - flash sync

Equipment used:
Elinchrom BX Kit
Nikon D200
Standard lens and 105mm macro
Tripod
Small Soft Box
Light Meter
Sync lead

This was an experimental shoot, similar to the last two shoots which were exploring flat light and more accessible natural light. However this was using artificial light with flash sync.  I'm not technically brilliant when it comes to studios i always try to avoid them. So i've started experimenting with this equipment to get to grips with flash lighting and lighting ratios to improve my photography skills and to gain confidence with the equipment available to me while i have access. If I don't try it out, i'm never going to learn. For my final major project I want to use natural light but also artificial, to show i've explored experimentation throughout this.

These are just a few images from the shoot: (Will add more once I've finished editing)

WBL: Exhibition: The best so far...
2013
On Monday 18th March my course year (FD Photography YR 2) at Plymouth College of Art will be starting preparation in putting together our local exhibition at Trerise Gallery in Plymouth for the private view on Wednesday 20th. The exhibition will be held from 18th to 28th March. The exhibition is to promote ourselves as current upcoming practitioners to the photography discipline, and to hopefully gain local recognition.

Don't hesitate to visit if you live in Plymouth or nearby surrounding areas.

Photographer/Painter: Jenny Saville

Photographer/Painter:
Jenny Saville

I recently came across this photographer in the book called Vile Bodies: Photography and the crisis of looking (By Chris Townsend) I included her work in my research and inspiration for my final major project - on exploration of the body. I found her work really interesting and thought her exploration of the body to represent people's perceptions of their own bodies is an extreme problem of todays society. She did a photographic series where she collaborated with fashion photography Glenn Luchfordusing her body to document her friend's obsession to lose weight; her friend would draw lines on areas of the body she wanted to change and lose weight so her body fell onto the lines (the same as post cosmetic surgery markings)

Also her self-portraiture paintings, she would enlarge areas of her body to reflect the struggles with mind and our perceptions of the body, followed by obsession and the pressure from the controlling media. We unfortunately live in an era where the body is the centre of everything and we will never be happy with our bodies until perhaps its too late; abused bodies from self destruction.

Experimentation: Fragment shoot with more natural light

Shoot 2: Fragments of the body: With natural light.

This is reacting the first shoot using more accessible natural light - to avoid flattening the images as seen in the previous shoot. For experimentation purposes into ideas in how to represent this subject matter for the whole body of work.

Shot with digital (D3100)
Taken on 9rd March 2013
(I also want explore this project using medium format for quality and a wider tonal range)

This is a shoot exploring the subject matter of the male body (which i am exploring for my second year final major project) The idea and purpose behind the shoot was to photograph the body as fragmentations changing angles, experimenting with perspective and composition to create abstract images of the human form but still recognisable. My final major project is focusing on various themes all relating to the body, looking at how the body is exploited in the media, an object to sell products. The idea is to create a series of work showing the true nature of the body portraying it as we should understand it, a form that is dynamic, capable of so many fascinating abilities; to heal, to grow the list goes on.

Photographer: John Coplans

Photographer: John Coplans

Recently came across his work in a book called The Body: Photo works of the Human Form by William A Ewing, a book on the beautiful, bizarre and revealing secrets of the body. I particularly like his self-portraiture work on the fragments of his own body because he is simply showing what the body is and stripping away perceptions; 'not beautifying it' no hiding, no distorting, just the human form it all it's fascinating glory. He also claims to have no interest documentary wise in his own body. He says 'My photographs recall the memories of the human race' (Quote from The Body:photo works of the Human Form: chapter: fragments, page 50)

Photographer: Lee Frost

Lee Frost a well known travel photographer from London whose landscape imagery has recently caught my eye especially his black and white film images; a mixture of subject matters, ranging from seascapes to deserted land.  His eye for composition is amazing, his images show perspective, angles and parallels that mirror what appears to be another world, a world you want to be a part of and take care of. Overall his work is visually appealing, beautiful landscapes, intriguing perspectives that take you in making you want see and know more; to become part of these places, and importantly part of his images. This is why I believe his photography is so successful.
